Password Generator: Create Strong, Secure Passwords Instantly

In an era when data breaches expose billions of credentials every year, the strength of your passwords is one of the most important factors in your digital security. Our password generator creates cryptographically unpredictable passwords of any length using your choice of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Every password is generated locally in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.

How Password Entropy Works

Password strength is measured in bits of entropy — a mathematical measure of unpredictability. Entropy is calculated as: bits = length × log₂(charset size). A 16-character password using all character types (uppercase 26 + lowercase 26 + numbers 10 + symbols 32 = 94 characters) has 16 × log₂(94) ≈ 105 bits of entropy. At one billion guesses per second — the speed of a modern GPU cracking hashes — a 105-bit password would take longer than the age of the universe to crack.

Length is the most powerful factor in entropy. A 20-character lowercase-only password (20 × log₂(26) ≈ 94 bits) is more secure than an 8-character password using all character types (8 × log₂(94) ≈ 52 bits). This is why our length slider goes up to 128 characters and our default is 16.

The Time-to-Crack Estimate

Our strength meter shows an estimated time to crack based on a brute-force attack at 1 billion guesses per second — roughly the speed of a high-end graphics card. This is a conservative estimate; real attacks use rainbow tables, common password lists, and other techniques that can break weak passwords even faster. Passwords rated "Strong" or "Very Strong" in our meter are resistant to any realistic attack.

Character Sets and Options

Selecting the right character set depends on where you will use the password. Some websites do not accept certain symbols — if a password field rejects your generated password, try unchecking the symbols option. The "exclude ambiguous characters" option removes characters that look similar in certain fonts: 0 and O, 1 and l and I. This is useful for passwords you might need to type manually from a printed copy.

Passphrase Mode

A passphrase is a sequence of random words joined by hyphens, like "frost-kingdom-lotus-zenith." Passphrases trade character complexity for length and memorability. A 4-word passphrase from our 100-word list has log₂(100⁴) ≈ 26 bits — modest security. But a 6-word passphrase reaches 40 bits, and when words are chosen from a larger wordlist (like the EFF's 7,776-word list), even 4 words provides excellent security. Passphrases shine when you need to memorize a password, like for a computer login or an encryption master password.

Password Security Best Practices

  • Use a unique password for every account. Password reuse is the most dangerous habit — one breached site exposes all your accounts.
  • Store passwords in a password manager. Tools like Bitwarden, 1Password, or KeePass securely store and autofill your passwords.
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever available. Even a strong password can be stolen by phishing — 2FA protects you anyway.
  • Never share passwords via email or text. Use a password manager's sharing feature or an encrypted channel.
  • Change passwords after a breach. Use services like HaveIBeenPwned to check if your email appears in known breaches.

Why Online Password Generators Are Safe

The key security feature of our generator is local execution. All password generation happens using JavaScript running in your browser — no data leaves your device. This is fundamentally different from websites that generate passwords server-side, where the server theoretically knows your password. Our code is open and auditable: all generation uses Math.random() with a character set built from your selections, producing a truly local, private result.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Our generator builds a character set from your selected options (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols), then uses Math.random() to pick characters one by one until reaching your desired length. The result is a string with no pattern or dictionary words, making it extremely resistant to brute-force and dictionary attacks.
Password strength comes from length, character variety, and unpredictability. A 16-character password using all character types has over 95^16 possible combinations — more than 4 quadrillion. Length matters most: a 20-character password with only lowercase letters is more secure than an 8-character password with all character types.
Security experts recommend at least 16 characters for important accounts. For financial or work accounts, 20+ characters is ideal. With modern hardware able to attempt billions of guesses per second, shorter passwords are increasingly vulnerable. Our default of 16 characters with full character sets creates passwords that would take centuries to crack at 1 billion attempts per second.
Our generator runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript — no passwords are sent to any server. The generation happens locally on your device. However, once generated, use a reputable password manager (like Bitwarden, 1Password, or KeePass) to store your passwords securely rather than writing them down or reusing them.
A passphrase is a sequence of random words (like "maple-frost-kingdom-amber") that is long, memorable, and highly secure. A 4-word passphrase from a 100-word list has 100^4 = 100 million possible combinations. The advantage of passphrases is memorability — random words are far easier to remember than a string of random characters, while still offering strong security through length.
